SU must come clean: I no longer even check the Sports Section in the New York Times. For you Millennials, that is part of a newspaper. I am also no longer reading espn.com. No games, no need. Although I did just see that the French Open has been canceled and will be played in September. I assume not at the same time as the US Open!
I have been giving some thought to what sports we can play outside once the weather turns warmer in April. My thinking:
- Tennis: as long as you don’t have a 2-handed backhand, you can wear a golf glove on your left hand and avoid having to touch the ball. Keep the 6-foot social distance with your doubles partner (no chest bumps during the match) and no post-match handshakes. SU says it’s certainly doable.
- Golf: I have read some articles on line about golf. The consensus is that you don’t go into the pro shop and you don’t drive a cart. Pay at the first tee, use a pull cart or walk and carry your bag. Pick your own ball out of the cup. Wear 2 golf gloves so you can remove the flag from the hole. Again, SU says doable.
- Basketball: nope
- Soccer: nope
- Paddle Tennis: this might be harder to maintain the 6-foot social distance minimum. Plus more likely to collide with your partner.
SU is in the middle of Babylon Berlin on Netflix. Highly recommend. Takes place in Berlin in 1929 before the rise of Nazism. Dubbed from German (I think). Worth a look says SU.
That’s it for now. Tom Brady to the Bucs for $30 million a year? Hard to see how that is a happy ending for him but he will in fact get paid handsomely (and he is handsome). The NFL draft will be held with no crowd. Baseball is targeting late May now.
SU says SNY and the YES Network should broadcast every game from last season in 2020 on the same day that it was played in 2019. We need to get into some type of rhythm. If you are a Yankee fan, you can try and tune in for games that Yankee players got injured. You can either research that or just watch – pretty much every game I think.
The floor is open for other streaming suggestions or sports talk.
The Plot Against America was an excellent book, hoping this series on HBO maintains that standard.
Yes, I saw that debuted on Monday night on HBO. Looked interesting and a lot of good reviews leading up to it. I will check it out.
Bicycle riding!!!!
I’m looking forward to the Brady sans Belichick experiment. It will be interested see if both thrive or tank. The Bucs certainly have more offensive weapons than the Pats had so there is no reason they won’t be a 30+ PPG team. It remains to be seen if their defense can stop anybody though. Belichick has a decent D in NE but the offense is going to struggle mightily.
Just toured all the B Ball courts in Rye Brook. All the rims were taken down. Found rims at Port Chester HS. Bo one was out there so I shot around.
Peaky Blinders and Broachurch on Netflix are quite good.
Since the gym in my building has now closed I’m starting to lift tortilla chips and toss them in my mouth. When U need to add weight to them I go with Guac or Hummus. Trying to do at least 20 repetitions 3 times
Thoughts for sports entertainment viewing – As a starter, once a week each Houston Astro batter who has been acknowledged to have violated the rules, could go to a designated ballpark. One opposing pitcher from each team could get 3 throws. Proper social distancing would need to be observed. Stands would be empty. 3-5 minute intervals between pitchers for commentary and commercials should suffice to avoid pitchers having contact with one another. Pitchers would be forced to use gloves on throwing arms.
Batters could wear protective head gear (we are not trying to kill them). Given the likelihood of a prolonged period off, most bruises and some broken bones would likely heal by the time the season restarts. This way, we could just get the inevitable beanings out of the way. Probably safer for the Astros as they would have headgear and are prepared. Given lack of other things to watch and the mindset of the typical sports fan, I would expect this to rival if not exceed Super Bowl ratings for the first few viewings.
I am sure there are derivatives of this for other sports.
Phil, it’s good to see that you are making good use of your in place sheltering experience. Probably not a good idea to keep watching those highlights from last year’s and the 2017 ALCS series with the Astros.
I watched Babylon Berlin and enjoyed it. I think a second season is coming soon.
Tony, I will update you. There are 3 seasons apparently now. Get to it!
