MLB is Not Fooling Around

Check out the discipline just handed down by MLB to the Astros.  And Alex Cora is now officially on the clock!  From http://www.espn.com:

Houston Astros’ Jeff Luhnow, AJ Hinch suspended 1 year

Houston Astros GM Jeff Luhnow and manager AJ Hinch have been suspended for one year after an MLB investigation found the team used technology to cheat during its World Series-winning 2017 season, it was announced Monday.

Additionally, MLB will fine the Astros $5 million and take away their first- and second-round draft picks in the 2020 and 2021 drafts.

MLB said in its statement that if Luhnow or Hinch “engage in any future material violations” of MLB rules, they will be placed on the league’s permanently ineligible list.

No players were disciplined by MLB in the Astros’ investigation. While Mets manager Carlos Beltran was part of it, he was a player at the time and thus was not suspended.

Discipline for Red Sox manager Alex Cora is coming and is going to be harsh, sources tell ESPN.

Cora is identified throughout MLB’s report as ringleader with Beltran. Commissioner Rob Manfred said that discipline for Cora will be announced at the completion of its investigation into the Red Sox’s alleged use of the video replay room to steal signs during the 2018 season.

  1. I thought managers don’t call the shots anymore. If the manager doesn’t get to decide which side of 2nd base the shortstop stands on, how’s he gonna get the budget and personnel to do the video analysis and communication required in these schemes? Hard to believe that any real investigation would not implicate the front office.

As with the Mitchel Report, this is going to become a story where a couple teams and their high profile managers are going to take the fall when the issue has to be more widespread. Players and coaches move between teams so often, how could two teams possibly be doing this for years and nobody else was?

    1. Correcting myself: Looks like GM is out too. And now I see report that he and Hinch were fired by the Astros. That’s a surprise to me.

  2. I don’t think it matters who the manager and GM are. I’m sure they’ll hire studs (showalter/Dombrowski?) to replace them and if the Astros owner is so righteous and brave he should cut the players that banged on the trash can. So this is just a PR move in my mind. What I don’t understand is 1) Why it took 2 years to start investigating when the players were banging the trash cans in front of everyone’s face in 2017 (check YouTube for evidence) and 2) Why a player faces suspension for getting caught doing steroids but a player can get caught using technology to steal signs (also explicitly cheating) and get nothing. Manfred even acknowledged it was player driven in the report. Very strange (and in my opinion soft) penalties here from Manfred and the owner.
