Didi Signs 1-Year Deal with Phillies

And there you have it.  As reported by Sweeney Murti on Twitter, Didi Gregorius is leaving New York.  SU says the Yankees will regret this one – big time.    But it does fulfill Cashman’s dream of fielding a totally right-handed line up.  Could the Yankees also have signed him for the 1-year deal?  One wonders.  The word is that Didi wants a rebound year to help him get the next big contract after 2020.

All I know is that Didi could play in New York – he succeeded Derek Jeter and excelled.  He was a leader in the clubhouse along with CC.  Now they are both gone.  SU is not happy.

On the Cole front, rumor has it that the Yankees offered a richer deal than what Strasberg got.  Have to figure we are in the $300 million range for 8 years.  He can room with Stanton and they can argue over who will pay for dinner.

  1. I agree about Didi and his intangibles. Torrez is an average fielder at best. If he gets hamstring tightness who becomes the shortstop?
Losing a lefty bat hurts too.

  2. Big deal for Cole. That is a lot of $$ tied up in two players but I’m guessing it is the win now deal even if it costs the Yankees wins in 3+ years when everyone gets old and creaky.

In other news, the irrelevant Knicks get blown out by Portland. How could this be? I thought the problem was the coach?!? What a pack of disappointing morons the front office is.

  3. The Did thing seems very strange. He remains one of Cashman’s best acquisitions. We know he can play in NY. We know he can be a middle of the order guy if necessary. We know he plays a good shortstop. And he’s developed a strong fan following. Not sure why the two sides didn’t want to go out of their way to make this work. My sense is that the Yankees must have some insight regarding injury risk and Did doesn’t see it that way. Still, Still, the infield is a little crowded so I can understand not wanting to clog it up…but still, a one year deal? Why not match that?

Big money for Cole. Too big in my eyes but I guess that’s the market. You read all the articles where they talk about the other big contracts and they’re almost all regrettable. David Price is mentioned as a reference point. How can that be? He’s played 4 seasons with the Red Sox. Two of those have been decent. And by decent, I mean more than 7 wins. The league needs to figure out how to reign this in a bit…or maybe the gambling $$ is coming so fast that all the teams can just throw money around.
