It’s Hard to Go Out Gracefully

The Giants just announced that, once again, they are moving on from Eli Manning and will give Daniel Jones a shot at QB.  For SU, this is a step up from Geno Smith – I mean that was an embarrassment.  We don’t know about Jones at this point but SU likes the move.  Clearly, there is nothing to lose – like the Jets, the Giants are going nowhere this season.

It’s hard to go out on your own terms in work or in professional sports.  If you stick around long enough, someone will take your spot and it won’t be pretty.  Eli is a good guy and a great teammate.  No doubt he will take the high road here.  Of course, you do wonder if some other team might want to trade for him given the absence of quality QBs in the NFL right now.  It is pretty amazing how many teams have a less than average quarterback.  It’s also possible that Jones will get hurt and Eli will be right back in there in a few games.

So, what do you think?  The right move, right time?

  1. The Giants spent $21 million on Eli to find out they’re not going to compete this season after two games? We could have told them that two years ago. This money could have gotten them some defensive help. Just so aggravating how stupid hiring Gettleman and everything he’s done has been.

  2. This will be a big media story but it probably shouldn’t. Everyone knew it was coming. The Giants put themselves in a position where they needed to evaluate the next quarterback. Maybe it wouldn’t have been until October but what’s the difference. This is much more appropriate than what happened a few years ago.

I’m sure nobody cares because they’re making a ton of money.but the NFL has a real quality problem with it’s product. The games are pretty terrible. Everything is skewed in favor of the offense yet there are only enough quality quarterbacks in the world to make 5-10 of those offenses reliably productive. I’m not sure what the answer is but I imagine it’s a suite of rule changes that would level the playing field among quarterbacks and elevate the role of defense.

  3. I appreciated it when Kurt Warner chimed in on this as he was in this exact same situation when Eli came to town (and when Matt Leinhart came to Arizona). I believe that Pittsburgh, Jacksonville, or New Orleans (depending on Brees’ thumb) could be a fit. The J-E-T-S would also be a good landing spot for him depending on how soon Darnold is coming back and whether he would be willing to play that mentor role. We still do not know if Darnold is an NFL QB so it might not be a bad move for them.

  4. Never easy to say goodbye to a legend. The Giants and Ely were loyal to a fault. Both would have been better off if he had departed a year or two ago. It did not seem to hurt Payton’s legacy when he went to Denver. It’s not worth compounding a mistake to make everyone feel better. Losing sucks and it is best now to rip off the band-aid and give Jones a chance to grow into the role. Trade Eli to a team of his choice for a 6th round pick and look to the future. If Jones gets hurt who cares? The Giants are not making the playoffs this year any way.

Awful injury to Jets QB Trevor Semian last night. Let’s hope it’s not a career ender. Still young and very sharp with a decent arm but nothing great. There’s always wall street! Go Cats!

    Finally, WELCOME BACK GIANCARLO STANTON!
Sure to be the playoffs and world series MVP.

  5. It would be pretty amazing if the Steelers traded for Eli – and Eli had one more moment in the sun! I know 99% of people think Eli is DONE but I am in that tiny sliver of the 1% who thinks he could have one magical run with the right O Line and WRs – and in a big leverage situation. Pretty fun to think about !

  6. The Giants gambled that they would have a decent offense based on their offensive line upgrade. The problem is that they have no receivers worth worrying about so the defense can line up inside the box and let their secondary go one on one with the Giants receiving corp. Coupled with the fact that their defense is a work in progress as they will go from horrendous to later in the season just bad you might as well get Jones some experience now….trade down for a host of picks in next year’s draft and hope the giants can win 6-8 games in 2020… which would be encouraging. Expect us to go 1-15 or at best 2-14 this season. We will be fighting with the Dolphins for the first selection.
BTW… everyone new this was going to happen. Why didn’t Gettelman know what everyone else new. We sure could have used that $21mm we gave Eli. We owe him nothing.

PS I am still having trouble with the fact that he received the Super Bowl MVP twice… undeservingly. With such mediocre regular season stats his whole reason for probably getting into the Hall are those two points. Hey…Joe Willy had mediocre stats… actually threw more picks than TD’s yet his prediction and his fur coat (before Clyde and Ear the Pear) got him in. The Jets only scored 16 points… with only 1 TD. I guess good looks and a Broadway Joe name was good enough.
