Redemption

SU is not a huge golf fan but I must admit I watched much of the final round (and some of the 3rd round) of the Masters this weekend to see if Tiger Woods would win.  I have always been a Tiger Woods fan.  True, he is a flawed human being and much of his trouble has been self-inflicted (at least the porn stars part).  But he has made golf “cool” (as some say) by incorporating fitness and strength into the mix, and has been a model for a whole generation of today’s young golfers.  He is also great for ratings and yesterday’s final round, with so many golfers in contention, was fun to watch (especially compared to watching any Yankee game this year which is truly painful).

SU was trying to recall a greater redemption story in sports but it really is hard to think of one.  There was probably some boxer who late in his career won another championship well past his prime (Ali?) but given that Woods was at a point where he might never play again for health reasons, this was pretty amazing (hopefully there won’t be a Dr. Galea story that pops up in the next few weeks to spoil all of this).  Of course, Ron Burgundy’s great comeback in the movie Anchorman is another heart-warming story of redemption.

SU knows there are a number of Tiger haters on this subscriber list.  Some of you may not be happy about this weekend’s developments.  Thoughts?

SU will post later about the Yankees and the Mets.  The Mets, by the way, are a fun team to watch.  And you know what???  They actually try and hit to the opposite field.  What??  They also must have a training and strength and conditioning staff that knows how to keep players from pulling calf muscles when they move to colder weather.  Anyway more to come on that front.

  1. Big Tiger fan here. Golf needs Tiger. Hope he wins another couple of majors. He is flawed, but so is everyone else.

  2. Grats to Tiger. I’m a fan of him as well. I think most of these sports stars are flawed anyway and I rarely follow any of their personal lives. I just watch them play their chosen sports not use them as a model of how to live my life.

  3. UVA’s 16-1 turnaround has to be up there with the greatest sports redemption stories. This is just a redemption month I guess. Happy for Tiger – who doesn’t love an incredible comeback like that. Hope all is well!

  4. Tiger is all class out on the course and in public. Who really cares what he does in his personal life as long as he’s a good father. He didnt kill anyone nor steal from anyone. I’m sure his Ex Wife made out just fine financially.
This was absolutely a feel good story . There are so many solid golfers playing today in which mist of them fill up there arm sleeves with muscle.
PS. If you noticed the crowds that were cheering for him they were both men and women.

  5. Anything to take my mind off the Yankees! Aren’t they still playing
hockey and basketball, maybe I’ll watch that.

  6. Big golf fan and a huge Tiger fan for many years…no offense to the Golden Bear, but I think Tiger was the greatest player of all time if he had retired with 14 majors based on the quality of the fields in his era compared to Jack, and now he should be remembered as one of the most heroic champions of all time in any sport…if you’re not a golf fan, I don’t think you realize how outstanding the competition is every week, and that leaderboard yesterday was stacked with some of the best of the best…other than team sport victories, definitely my best moment ever as a sports fan…and you know it had to be a huge accomplishment if it knocked the Yankees out of the SU headline!

  7. Two ways to look at this. One is to look at what he’s gone through and the time between championships and declare this a comeback. The other is to recognize that we are talking about a guy where greatness wasn’t defined by a single tournament win but by regular tournament wins. By that standard, this would only be the beginning of a potential comeback.
