Tiger Woods is Still Must See TV

Let’s face it: having Tiger Woods in the mix on a Sunday for a major is still riveting TV.  Love him or hate him, he makes it all so much more exciting.  Yesterday, he pretty much missed every fairway and green on the front 9 and still shot a 64.  He was right there at the end.  SU has always been a fan.  I don’t let the personal stuff with athletes get in the way.  Porn stars?  Won’t talk to the other players?  Too standoffish?  Get over it. Otherwise, aside from Aaron Judge, there would be no one to root for.  He is still only 42 years old and if you look at the rest of the field and some of the older guys still playing, he can still compete at a high level for another 6-7 years.  Hopefully he will make the Ryder Cup roster and we go from there.

You probably missed it but this Greek phenom, Stefanos Tsitsipas, almost ran the table to win the Rogers Cup in Toronto.  He beat Thiem, Djokovic, Zverev and Anderson before losing to Nadal in the final.  This dude is only 19.  Tennis is really set up now for the next generation.  It will be interesting to see how long it takes them to supplant the Big Four who are still dominant.  Time to renew your subscription to the Tennis Channel!

As for the Yankees, after getting destroyed by Boston, they have quietly taken care of business winning 6 of 7 against bad teams.  Now, CC has an inflamed knee and is on the DL.  PAGING SONNY GRAY.  He was terrible yesterday giving up 5 hits in 1+ innings to make a 7-0 game uncomfortable.  It’s either him or one of the rookies.  SU says Boone will go with Gray first.  Cross your fingers.  I do give Boone credit for sticking with his players and letting them work out of trouble or get one more start.  He did that with Zach Britton on Saturday (it was a mistake) and continues to put Bird out there game after game.

Finally, Ronald Torreyes is back!  He is the ultimate good luck charm for the Yankees.  What took them so long?  Enough of the Tyler Wade experiment.  Torreyes can actually hit and deserves some starts now that he’s back.  Greg Bird is ready to go off now – just a hunch.  We need a lengthy rain delay tonight after the 2nd inning.  It’s worth the trade-off of deGrom for Severino.  Let the bullpens battle it out.

    1) can you add Jason to your blast list. He can expand reach to the NU 18 year olds.

    2) re Tiger, how is he not the comeback story of the year (even not having won a major).

  2. Watching Severino against the Mets is painful. We have a 100 win team without a legitimate ace at this point. Such a weird season. Just hoping we have a healthy roster for the playoffs and then rely on “anything can happen in a short series ”

  3. Without a doubt Greg Bird is the Yankees best AAA player. Nice bunt to beat the shift, but that is all he has. Time to let go as the experiment is over. The Yankees need to bring in a real first baseman who hits more than seven home runs in a season. Disappointing, I know, as we have been trying to make “fetch happen” for three years now, but at some point Cashman will come to his senses. As for Stanton, he is going to hit 53 home runs this year, but I think you can set your watch by the mid-inning strikeout where he swings at a breaking ball 3 feet out of the strike zone and then makes a face like “Hey, I hit two home runs in a 14-3 win over the White Sox off a AA level pitcher, so don’t judge me for striking out against an MLB pitcher.” Red Sox. Indians. Astros. Those are your contenders. Maybe Mariners/Athletics if they get hot at the right time. (And the constant story of the A’s/Raiders not having any money is getting quite old.) Sorry to say that perhaps next year will be the year for the Yankees – No magic in 2018 and the Indians won’t be fooled twice. Can someone ask Todd Frazier to actually put a helmet on his head that fits? As they show his LL World Series replays 267 times in the month of August apparently he has been wearing it that way for a while so I guess we can blame his rec coach for that?

  4. At least the Yankees scored more runs than Degrom’s ERA states. I guess that’s all anyone can say that’s positive after our #1 (supposed) stud pitcher laid yet another egg. 30 games above 500 and right now we don’t know who our best pitcher is. Scary.
With no Americans in the “Big” 4 or maybe we should say the Top 10, like soccer without an American who watches tennis that much from here?
1″ from a birdie. 1 rimmed cup for almost another birdie…. that’s all that separated Tiger from being tied for the lead. Let’s see if he can follow this tourney up with another stellar performance and get a victory. He was laser focused on Sunday. if he had dropped that long putt in on I think the 16th the place would have erupted like we have never heard in 10 years.
Notice how many players are not chiseled and can hit the ball a ton. Tiger isn’t the only one now. I wonder where the John Daly’s and Curtis Strange have all gone? Even Jack Nicklaus and Lee Trevino had a medium size gut back in the day.

A very big test for the Giants defense this coming pre season game. I’m not so concerned about our offense but if we don’t start putting the pressure on D we will be losing or winning games like 38-34.
