Need to Remember that the Yankees are Young

SU says too much is being made about the Yankees recent ups and downs, and getting destroyed in Boston last night.  The reality is that the team has one of the youngest rosters in baseball.  Consider:

  • The infield has Bird, Torres, Didi and Andujar.  Didi is the wily veteran of this group.  Last night, Bird made a mis-read on a grounder late in the game and Andujar was slowing throwing on two plays.  It’s something he needs to work on and SU is sure he will figure it out – it just may not be in 2018.
  • Holder, who got lit up, is basically a rookie as well.  Of course, Boone left him in the game way too long.
  • Sanchez is young as are Judge and Severino.

This all means that you will have dumb plays, losses of focus and bad outings from a young roster.  It doesn’t mean that they won’t be a factor in October.  It does mean that they are not necessarily built to win in 2018.

SU won’t panic.  Last night was tough to watch and the Red Sox had so many extra base hits.  Credit to them – tip your hat and move on.  The Yankees need Severino to be good tonight which I am thinking is a big ask given his recent performances.  Chance Adams will likely get the start tomorrow.  Gray’s implosion on Wednesday really screwed up the pitching for this series now.  It’s interesting how “unclose” these games have been with the Red Sox.  They all seem to be blowouts for one side or the other.

SU is hoping for a clean game tonight – win or lose.  Let’s see how Boone gets the train back on track and how he uses those exceptional communication skills with the youngsters.  Stanton hit a home run when the game was out of hand but not his fault.

Any chance for the division title needs a win tonight.  Otherwise, full speed ahead for the wild card.

  1. Note that Yankee wild card lead over both Oakland and Seattle is now 5.5 games, although those teams have 10 games left against each other, and 7 (for Oakland) and 10 (for Seattle) against Houston- Yankees also play them back to back on a West Coast swing right after Labor Day. Also remember that the Yankees pulverized Boston in Game 3 of the 2004 ALCS (19-8, I think) just before Boston swept the next four games.

  2. If you want to make the excuse on how young the team is during the first third of the season I would agree with you….NOT 110 GAMES into the season. That’s 110 games… not 10 games. If I recall we were 30 games above 500 a month ago? If you want to make an excuse for our 500 playing over the past month why don’t we use these reasons instead: 1. The law of averages catches up to games in which you need to come from behind to win. 2. The wear and tear on any player once the summer hits can happen to anyone young or old…. you can make excuses for either age group… but it really boils down to the individual player. This game the way you generally make the playoffs consists of 2-3 hot streaks and the rest of the season you play 500 ball. We have had 2 solid hot streaks. We should have one more to get us to 100+ wins
I believe we have the tools to make that happen…. with Happ, Sanchez and Judge coming back. Sanchez is the wild card. Maybe he should talk with Odell Beckum Jr. he will straighten him out…. Yikes !!!

  3. Agree with Andy. Tough to swallow but Sanchez is the key to this team making it deep into playoffs. Will he show some maturity and get his head on straight? Severiino bouncing back and acting like an ace is obviously a must. Let’s see how the dog days of August treat them. Meanwhile, us Mets fans will have to settle for media book tidbits from Gary Keith and Ron to entertain us for the rest of the year.
