Mike Francesa Lives!

I don’t know if you have been following the Mike Francesa saga of late.  To much fanfare, the Imperious One retired last year – end of an era, blah, blah, blah.  Well, he misses the spotlight and has unsuccessfully worked to land a new gig somewhere.  Rumor has it that he explored something with Mad Dog on Sirius Radio as well as other things but nothing worked out.  Sooooo, he then went back to WFAN hat in hand but apparently there was no interest.  Not taking no for an answer, he then went to the President of the parent company that owns the FAN and asked for his afternoon drive time show back for less money.  They agreed and booted the afternoon show to an earlier slot in the afternoon.  Looks like Big Mike (and he is a big dude) will be back on as early as next week from 3 – 7 pm.  It also sounds like all of the other FAN sports show hosts hate him big time – more so than before as they already beat the rush and hated him based on some of his comments ridiculing the FAN since his retirement.  As they say, “what a d**k!”

Keep an eye on Brian Cashman next week.  Drury is ready to come off the DL and will start a rehab assignment tonight.  You may remember that they traded for him to play 3rd base or 2nd base.  Since he went on the DL with dizziness, Andujar has been red hot and an extra base hit machine.  They have also now brought up Gleyber Torres and gave him #25 so he is here to stay.  Let’s figure Drury is ready to play early next week.  If you are Cashman, what do you do?  Andujar is a rookie and has options.  Will they (stupidly) send him down to Scranton?  Do you release the over-the-hill Neal Walker who has a $6 million salary (SU believes)?  But Walker can play 1st base.  Or do you send Tyler Austin down?

SU says Cashman should have gone all in on the young line up right from the start.  That was a mistake.  By signing Walker and trading for Drury, you have clogged up the works.  Did you see that on Monday, the Yankees’ entire line up including Severino who pitched was under 30 years of age?  How cool is that?

SU has been checking out some NBA playoff action.  It is must see tv.  Let me tell you: no big hugs out there.  It’s chippy, physical and intense.  Credit to the NBA for putting on a quality post-season show.

NFL draft tomorrow night.  What will the Giants and Jets do?  And what should they do?

  1. WFAN should be an interesting place to work next week. Big Mike is quite the A-hole but the new afternoon show was absolutely terrible. I could not listen for more than ten minutes at a time. The ratings were going straight down. Mike is good for business and he knows his sports. People tune in for whatever reason and that’s what matters.

The Mets have had a tremendous start despite poor starts by their entire starting outfield and mediocre starting pitching with the exception of Jacob DeGrom. How can Cespedes have 21 RBIs in 21 games and be hitting 200? If they can get these guys on track perhaps we really can start dreaming of a Subway Series.

Brandon Drurry has been a pretty good ball player for AZ the last 2 years despite living with migraines and blurred vision. He is only 25 years old. If the NY doctors have straightened out his health issues imagine what he can do for the Yankees. I know you love Andujar but he seems like a major trade chip to get the Ace starting pitcher the Yankees desperately need.

Waiting to see your football draft preview. When was the last time both NY teams were picking in the top ten, let alone #s 2 and 3. It should be a blast. All I can say is…
    J E T S Jets Jets Jets
    R O S E N Rosen Rosen Rosen.

Please Jets, don’t screw this up and take a midget QB instead of our boy! I already have the Jersey!

  2. Francesa was, is and will always have an arrogance….superiority Aurora about him. His knowledge of baseball and football are quite good….much lesser so in the other sports….but he thinks he knows everything.
So each inning Gray has walked somebody. The movement on his pitches are very good but he needs to throw more strikes and let our :defense” take over…..OY!!!
Didii just hit another homerun. He should be player of the month…along with Trout.

  3. I don’t really care about any WFAN shows, but sports radio in Atlanta is terrible. All commercials and no substance – sports radio should not just be reading scores and broadcasting ads for Zerorez carpet cleaning.
I think Browns take Allen, Giants take Darnold, and Jets take the QB from UCLA that could not win games with an abundance of talent around him. Mayfield (Arizona) and Jackson (Pittsburgh) drop in the draft Lamar Jackson returns punts and plays situational downs in the slot for Pittsburgh for next three years and never sees the field as a QB. Mayfield – lots of fire but no success in the NFL. I think there is a QB selected in the 3rd or 4th round who actually ends up being the best QB of this class. The Browns take Barkley at 4 and win 7 games in 2018 and 11 in 2019.
Speaking of terrible shows, ESPN’s “Get Up” is a joke. They should pull the plug on it asap. Everyone should have known that Jalen Rose would not want to wake up at 3 AM every day to do a morning show. He is out at a bar watching the Raptors game right now. Too bad they cannot find a show for Greenberg to be paired with a former athlete where they mix in sports, personality, donuts, and daily (hourly) guest appearances. Something like that could really work (for 17 years).
Did I miss the SU where I was supposed to provide my NBA playoff predictions?

  4. The afternoon show in Francesa’s absence has been absolutely awful. Some with the one on ESPN. I imagine their research tells them that cramming more people in the studio will help reach a larger audience thanks to the appeal of each host. But the result is awful radio. I’d like Francesa more if I thought it was all an act. Not knowing him personally, I can’t say either way. The on-air persona is intolerable but makes for good listening at times.
