A Couple of Things

Check out my man Djokovic at the French Open yesterday.  This is why he is SU’s fave even though he is going through some personal issues and may be on the downside of his career.  SU likes this type of stuff even at the professional level.

Novak Djokovic was so impressed by his opponent’s shot that he gave him a high five

Jacoby Ellsbury’s stay on the DL may be longer than anticipated.  It’s time to not worry about arbitration eligibility dates and bring up someone from the minors who can contribute now.  SU did some checking and Dustin Fowler is hitting .314 at Scranton/Wilkes Barre with 13 doubles, 7 triples and 8 home runs in 44 games playing centerfield and batting left-handed.  SU says the time is now.  He’s 22 years old and this will put fans in the seats at Yankee Stadium.  Maybe he can even play first base?

Finally, Tiger Woods registered a 0.00 on his breathalyzer test.  Looks like his explanation has legs regarding painkillers.  Not fake news!

  1. +1 on Fowler. Might as well give him a shot. But with Hicks playing well, he wouldn’t see that much action and would have to be sent down when Ellsbury returns. Not sure what move is best for his confidence and development.

I was at a game at The Stadium last week and, while the team is more exciting than it’s been in years, the building is as boring as ever. The place is dead quiet except for when they’re pumping in the fake noise. It’s absolutely embarrassing when they flash “get loud” on the screen and the noise rises to deafening levels and the moment they turn off the sound system the place goes silent. Everything about the Stadium works against engagement with the action on the field. The fraudience in the Judge section in right field doesn’t help. There was a NY Times article last week about relatively poor attendance at games and the team seems to believe that the solution involves engagement with millenials or something like that. The problem is that tickets are very expensive and the experience is very boring…and not just for millenials.

    1. Agree about the stadium noise level and how it’s pretty dead. The Legends people are rarely even watching the game; usually looking at their mobile devices. I do appreciate the extra leg room and open concourses vs. the old stadium – especially with 2 knee replacements. Citifield is more of a ballpark and is more intimate. They did an excellent job there. MLB has an ongoing challenge to make the game faster with more action. All the strikeouts are killer – especially late in games when the relievers are blowing people away. This is a big problem and not just in NY.

  2. I have to say I was actually ok with Bryce Harper’s mound charging but he has to work on his helmet throwing technique. Absolutely bad form. Throw it from the ear flap, not the visor. At least he was able to land one blow to the jackass who pelted him with a 96 mph fastball (would be considered assault if it happened on the street). Next time bring the bat with you as that will send the real message.

Albert Pujols is getting close to 600 HR’s. As the game moves away from that statistic this is still quite impressive. Just wish he had stayed in St. Louis, but who am I to judge someone’s decision as to where they want to play baseball for 81 games a year. I hear Southern California is not a bad place to live, and if you can afford it ($25 million per), enjoy it.

Mike Trout is an incredible baseball player and unfortunately the Angels are a AAA team with not to mention without him. Thus, his absence may not be noticed as they continue to struggle.

As for tennis, Nadal is going to go down as the best clay court player ever (obviously), and I don’t ever see anyone matching what he has done and will continue to do. The “old dogs” of tennis keep rolling along and keep winning these majors. What will Federer do at Wimbledon this year?

Every time you mention Jacob Ellsbury for some reason I picture Johnny Damon. Yawn and move on.

The Braves are in second place (and perhaps already mathematically eliminated), but we’ll take it.
