Pull the Trigger on Rubio for Rose Deal

We are one hour away from the NBA trade deadline and the latest on the proposed deal to send Derrick Rose to Minnesota for Ricky Rubio is this from Ian Begley at espn.com:

One holdup in the Minnesota talks for Derrick Rose has been that the Knicks hadn’t budged on their insistence that a second piece be added to the deal in a return for Ricky Rubio – a player or a draft pick, according to a source. With one hour to go, it will be interesting to see if the Knicks lower their demands or if Minnesota acquiesces.

SU says make the deal.  While Rubio can’t shoot from the outside, he is a pass first point guard which would greatly benefit Porzingis.  Rose is a “shoot first, I will pass the ball only if triple teamed on my way to the rim point guard.”  Rose will get his points but really seems to have no interest in passing.  Great offensive player with limited defense these days.

It’s a fair trade.  Don’t screw it up.

  1. Rubio really can’t shoot- has never shot better than 38% for any season in his career- would really be an addition by subtraction type of trade.

  2. Didn’t we just get through a bunch of years where the storyline was that the Knicks were suffering because their point guards weren’t scoring threats or couldn’t penetrate or whatever? Now they have one who penetrates and scores and that’s a problem too. This team is going nowhere until Anthony’s contract is up. I’d be happy with Rubio as he’s a better facilitator and defender. But I can’t help but feel like there is no sense tinkering. They should be tanking and trading for draft picks.

  3. and he is a white dude…. which makes our starting 5 40%…. a real victory for Trump fans. Will they need Oakley’s approval. Better make sure or else feel the Oak man’s wrath.
Yes, make the trade. How long would we have Rubio under contract for since this year is a lost cause. If its only this year he will move on somewhere else next year. Who would want to remain in this poisonous environment. How is his defense anyway? Maybe we should pick up Revis. I’m sure he can cover these guys

  4. I don’t think you can just trade for draft picks without equalizing the salaries of the players involved. That is the beauty of the cap. I think Rose is a free agent after this season and Rubio has a couple more years left. If Rose would pass, he could really help Courtney Lee who shoots over 40% from 3 range. Maybe I never paid enough attention while he was in Chicago but I thought he was a more complete player back then. Now it’s all offense and 1 on 1 to boot. KP is paying the price between Rose and Carmelo.

  5. Deadline is gone and no moves. I’ve always been a fan of point guards who focus on assists so I was looking forward to the Rubio deal. It still burns me up every time I hear Kyle Lowrey’s name mentioned because the Knicks didn’t pull the trigger there when they had a one sided deal in place in their favor.

The off season will be interesting to see what they do at the guard slot. I have no idea if they are going to make themselves better or worse this summer.
