SU had proposed this deal back in the winter.  It’s a natural and would allow LeBron to play with yet another friend.  Clearly, the Cavs are only interested in dealing with the Knicks when they can totally take advantage of them (see the trade for Shumpert and JR Smith).

But SU says the Knicks are on the right track.  Next stop: LA Clippers and Blake Griffin.  You need to trade your superstar for another team’s superstar.  The Hawks’ Millsap is also supposedly on the block although unlikely Carmelo wants to go to Atlanta.

Time to think outside of the box!

  1. The idea of a Love-Melo trade is ridiculous. Love is much younger and in his prime and Melo is over the hill and only makes teams better when he leaves. Melo and LeBron play the same position so it wouldn’t fit to play them together. If LeBron was only focused on playing with his buddies he never would have left Miami.

  2. Millsap is a great player and the Knicks would certainly do well to get him. However, I’m pretty sure the Hawks don’t want Melo in return. I really don’t see much happening on the Melo trade front as the only teams who might want him are teams that he wouldn’t waive his no trade clause for.

  3. Always great to hear from the #1 Cleveland fan on the SU list. Dave has his finger on the pulse of the Cavaliers and weighed in with a similar comment in the off season on this. I agree it’s not the best fit but Melo does play the 4 pretty well. It’s also interesting to hear how Melo is viewed outside of the NY area.
Mark: I think you have to look at major cities like LA, Miami, maybe Chicago for Melo as a landing spot. Then you do the best you can but he has all the leverage. Unreal he has the no trade; hardly anyone has that in the NBA.

  4. I think last time the suggestion was for a Kyrie-Melo trade (that was before the Knicks signed D Rose) which made even less sense. No one wants Melo.

    1. That could be, Dave! I must admit that Kyrie is just really, really good, and will take over the heavy lifting offensively for the Cavs as LeBron gets older. He is pretty much unstoppable. But I do think some team will be attracted to him but at a reduced rate when his current deal expires and he is 35. A team like the Spurs where he can be more of a role type player looking for his first ring.

  5. I don’t see any team wanting Anthony. Especially a good one. He would make just about any team worse. To hear that a team needs a “scorer” is nonsense. Of course there are teams that might be looking for points but Anthony’s points are not additive. He takes away from the rest of the offense. The chances that another team is interested are slim and, if such a team exists, there’s no way the Knicks will get anything of value in return. Even in a league full of GMs who make boneheaded decisions on a regular basis, there is no interest in Anthony. (By the way, this was also the case a couple years ago when the Knicks, bidding against nobody, gave him the big contract.)

  6. HOLD EVERYTHING !!! The definition of a superstar includes being able to score points, play at least average defense. The superstar which has a real inside game are very hard to fine. I guess you can say that Love has both an inside and outside game. The Knicks need an inside guy. On paper I would have given the Knicks kudos for pulling that trade off. However, what upside would Cleveland gain? They have plenty of shooters, solid defense…. but could always use more and a decent amount of movement in their offense. Does that sound like their need for a guy like Melo? Meanwhile, Love would probably get frustrated here in New York and simply regress. See Love in his first year in Cleveland.
You want to think out of the box then trade Melo to a team who will have a very good chance to obtain a top 3 selection based on the odds used during the draft. The only problem is Melo can nix any deal. He needs a ring and in no way would he allow a trade like this.
So where does that put the New York Knickerbockers? The answer remains: Between a rock and a hard place. Nothing has changed in their philosophy…. Porzingis just might never gain his full potential because of NY’s idiotic game plan.

    TURN THE CLOCK BACK:
    GO FEDERER GO
    GO VENUS GO

  7. Good point on Porzingis not reaching his potential. I have watched bits and pieces of the last few Knick games (no one can actually watch a complete game) and if he wants an open look it means getting the ball 35 feet from the basket. The offense just doesn’t flow through him at all. In the NBA, with the salary cap, any trade really needs to equalize salary so the only way you can trade Anthony is for another max type contract. That is the dilemma. And it’s why Blake Griffin is a possibility I think on a team that could use a little more offense out West.
