As a long-time NY Giants’ fan, SU was excited to see a defensive performance against Dallas that hearkened back to the days of Lawrence Taylor and Harry Carson. Even with JPP out, this kid from Notre Dame showed his game on national television and all of a sudden, there was actually a pass rush.
Eli did just enough on offense (and I mean just enough) and OBJ finally caught one of those passes and took it to the house. He dropped another sure TD pass in the 1st half but I guess with him you take the good with the bad. You have to figure the game a success if he can avoid an unsportsmanlike penalty. Dak Prescott was exposed a bit and all of a sudden, the Cowboys may have a quarterback controversy with a healthy Tony Romo waiting in the wings. This was his 2nd game in a row of non-productivity on 3rd down. The NFL is unforgiving as we all know and he will no doubt be feeling the pressure next Sunday night against Tampa Bay at home this time.
The Giants secondary is really excellent and you have to give Defensive Coordinator Steve Spagnuolo a ton of credit for making his defensive unit better with each successive week. If they can ever develop a consistent running game which you need in the colder weather come playoff time, they could be a real threat. SU is still not seeing much in that regard but defensively, they should be in most games. Eli needs more time in the pocket and he is still prone to make the blind pass in the 4th quarter but luckily Dallas dropped the interception possibility.
Combine this with a strong Knicks performance on the West Coast in a win over the Lakers, it was a good NY sports night. Melo cleared the air with Phil Jackson and had 5 assists in the 1st quarter alone. Connection there?
The Giants offensive line is putrid. Even though they some minor success every 5 rushes and one 20 yard gallup which was called back due to a holding penalty the O Line is just horrible at doing anything good. Why do you think Eli really can’t throw long effectively? The ones he does throw is based on the hope that his receiver will eventually outrun the D Back. That’s a very low success rate playing that way. He has no time to make the throw correctly. Taking only 2.5 seconds to make a throw tells you something. Even with that said it was still one of Eli’s worst games. Yes, Odell should have made that catch near the end zone as well as another short one but Dallas should have had at least 4 interceptions. They missed a few thrown to them as well. Dex Bryant was on another planet all game.
It was their best defensive performance by a Giant team since their game against the Pats in the Super Bowl…. maybe even better.
With Bradford having an index finger injury the timing could not be better for us. Win next week and split their last 2 games and here we are at11-5. Not too shabby.
PS The first 5 picks in the draft next year will be O Linemen and a tight end…. In 2019 a QB to be mentored by Eli.
How about those Rangers.. first team to 20 wins.
I’m not sure how “Zen” it is to get in a public fight with your star player but at least we finally have Phil Jackson getting involved in the team beyond the occasional reminder that the triangle still works.
This time he chose to send a message to Anthony and the entire team that somebody is paying attention to what they’re doing. The initial remarks weren’t all that nasty but they were undeniably true. 5 minutes of analysis of statistics or game film would confirm that Anthony’s playing style hurts the team’s offense. Jackson left the door open for Anthony to complain about the way the message was delivered but there was no room to debate the message itself. Anthony could tweet away that Jackson should have spoken to him privately but he could do nothing but accept the criticism. The effect could be huge. I don’t know if Anthony can truly change his game at this point (although his numbers would benefit) but I’m sure that the players and coaches may take a different approach when it comes to running the offense to best suit the system rather than deferring to their star. While he’s a few years too late, Jackson may finally have done what he’s paid to do.
