The Mets are taking over New York

For many weeks now, SU has been talking about how the Mets will soon be owning New York given their push to the playoffs and the Eastern Division title.  Many of you have “pooh-poohed” the idea but if you check out this story from today’s New York Times, clearly others agree with SU and they even have statistics to back it up (vs. making things up the old fashioned way).  Take a look at this story by Richard Sandomir:

They are a much more compelling story and exciting team.  The Yankees had a rare exciting moment in the 9th inning last night but those are few and far between.  The Mets have become the must see tv show in New York.

From the “hide your eyes” category, we bring you the NY Giants.  The revelation that Coughlin didn’t know how many timeouts Dallas had left on Sunday night (nor did Eli) and that Eli was telling Jennings to fall down before the goal line is incredibly hard to believe.  The only saving grace is that team is probably headed to a 5-11 record and another loss won’t make a difference.  But it will certainly make John Mara’s job easier at the end of the season to part ways with Tom Coughlin who is a good guy but has probably reached the end of the line here.

  1. And how about parting ways with Eli? Dallas did everything they could to give them that game. Tough to watch Eli who has been mediocre for the last few years.

  2. Josh, tough on Eli just like your Dad! If you look around the NFL, there are probably about 12-14 good quarterbacks and the rest are a cut below. If you jettison Eli, you will end up with a Ryan Fitzpatrick type. Eli is not perfect and he’s not the most accurate passer. But for me, he’s won 2 rings and he can put up big numbers given the time and the receivers. I am ok with Eli. More importantly, ask Jerry Reese for just one good player on defense!

    1. I have never been willing to put Eli alongside the top QBs in the game.but it’s important to point out that he probably is in that group of 12-14 and below that the drop off is huge. There are 15-20 teams have almost no chance for a successful season because of their QB. The Giants are lucky not to be in that group.

Also, don’t the Giants’ miscues all fade away if the defense could make a play?

  3. Why would you ever NOT score intentionally if it would give you a two-score advantage with 90 seconds left in the game? Someone is thinking too much. Also pretty ironic that anyone is assuming that the Giants could just score at will.

  4. The Yankees were ugly yesterday. Very tough to watch this offense right now. And the defense might be worse. They may need to come up with a new shift where a player stands next to Beltran to get to all the weak pop flies around the line that he can’t seem to get to.

  5. The truth about Carlos Beltran is that he is a DH. The guy cannot run at all. And forget about jumping for a homerun in the first row of seats at Yankee Stadium. To his credit, he has not complained about being out there every day. You wonder how the Yankees who have been on the roster all year feel about the rookie pitchers and rookie outfielders being involved in key plays late in the game. They are certainly better off with Chris Young out there for defense. The 2015 Yankees’ version of Paul Quantrill is the combination of Pinder and Mitchell. These are pitchers who come into games late or in extra innings when the coaching staff has a dinner reservation to get to. They end the game quickly like Quantrill did during the Joe Torre era.
