Nine years; $360 million. But hey, it’s a living. The Yankees may have wanted to get this done in April of this past year. SU likes Judge and nice that he will stay in New York but this contract will not end well. The question is how many years will he be healthy and productive?
You can say it’s not your money and just sign him but Hal manages to a budget and you have to wonder how they fill in the other pieces now. Cashman is signed for 4 more years as well. $40 beers coming to a theatre near you.
Good move by the Yankees? Too much money in Stanton and Judge now to build around them effectively? Thoughts?
Its ridiculous, but hey that’s the world we live in. Judge is a great guy and good player, happy to have him back. Let’s face it, we will not see anything like the year he just had and he looked like his old self in playoffs, striking out on the outside slider. We get 5 good years out of him and then bemoan the deal during the last 4 years like we did with A-Rod. At least he won’t be a jerk.
Agree that Judge is a good guy and the face of the franchise. It’s like when Bernie Williams was threatening to go to Boston and the Yankees were playing golf with Albert Belle. You try and hold onto the good guys. Judge will be named captain for sure and maybe he can lure some other free agents to the Bronx. Time will tell if he can stay healthy like he did in 2022.
Understand Jon Heyman won’t be confirming the story until he sees Judge in right field on opening day (against the Giants, of course).
Have to wonder if Jon Heyman was doing the Judge camp’s bidding to make the Yankees put up more money and years. Not his finest moment.
You had to sign the perfect Yankee. Identity is important to the team, the fans and to the name NEW YOUR YANKEES.
Did they overpay? I don’t think so as a player’s value goes beyond the stats on the back of his baseball card these days.
Find me a time in which thete wasn’t a player or two on the Yanks who was considered the backbone of the team? Besides Judge, who would that be? The answer is no one. Even during their last World Series drought during the Dave Winfield days you had a player or two that was our backbone.
I still think the Yanks are not done yet and will bring in another impact player or two. 2009 you and I were 53…and now 66. Add another 13 years and we will be 79. Aye caramba.
The Yanks had to do it and I’m glad they paid the price. They low balled him by 30-40 million last year and he gets 30-40 million above FV now to make up for the slight. When you bet on yourself and have one of the best offensive years in history you deserve to get paid. It wont age well, but they will worry about that down the road. Now the big question is do the Yanks follow the Mets to a 300 Million payroll or keep a soft cap around 260? Ticket prices and beer may go up but have you seen the cost of a Broadway ticket or ski pass at Mount snow lately? I just hope they keep the cheap seats at the cost of a movie and we can pregame in the parking lot.
As wise as the Yanks were to keep Judge I think the Mets made the right call on DeGrom. I love the guy but he did not want to be here and his injury history adds so much risk to that contract. And Verlander at 2 years is not a bad alternative (3 if he stays healthy).
The shame is that we don’t get to see DeGrom or many other home grown players complete their career with one team. MLB needs to create some incentive or cap allowance to make that easier.
He helps define the brand. Will he be overpaid the last 3 years? Yes. If you look at big picture he was underpaid his first 5. The average of his entire contract over the life of his term as a Yankee is in the mud 20’s.
He is good guy, a leader, and if we win 2 championships in next 8 yrs I’ll take it
