The End of the Andrew Velazquez Era in New York

The Yankees just announced that the LA Dodgers have claimed Andrew Velazquez off waivers from the Yankees. It is officially the end of an era. For those of you not paying attention, Velazquez came up from the minors in the 2nd half of the season and flashed a great glove, speed and some switch-hitting ability. Of course, he played for the minimum salary.

SU had projected him as the everyday shortstop in 2022 as a way to save money (what!!??) and spend on others where there was a greater need. Clearly, Gleyber Torres was not the answer and you don’t need an overpaid player at every position. The Yankees have 2 top prospects at shortstop in the lower minors and they will be ready in 2023 at the earliest. So, why not let Velazquez be that guy? Nope. Now, we will see them pursue one of the many free agent shortstops as they go in big on salary and number of years. SU says not a good investment and the team has other needs.

The rumor is it will be Seager on the LA Dodgers who at least bats left-handed. But Velazquez was a nice NY kid with a great story. Sigh. It will be an interesting winter.

  1. FYI, Seager boys grew up Yankee fans in up state NY. How about a BOGO deal. By the time the two young kids are ready to play SS Kyle will retire and Corey can slide over to 3rd base.

  2. OOps, My Bad. The boys dad was from upstate NY and they spent lots of time there with family. Still seems to make sense to bring to strong lefty bats to Yankee Stadium.

  3. It’s always an interesting winter for the Yankees. However, for those who believe the Yankees were built purely on the long ball to win after watching the Braves beat the powerful Dodgers with the LONG BALL as they out slugged the Dodgers 11-2 what do we all say now on how to win it all. BTW..the so called mediocre bullpen really stifled the Dodgers big time. Two shut outs is unheard of but the Braves did just that. Losing 7-0 in your home is embarrassing.
The Yanks need another stud pitcher. They also need to move past Britton and Chapman. They are unreliable. Too bad.
Bring in a stud shortstop. LeMahieu can play some third, some second and some first base and some DH. This way he gets his at bats. I’d like us to get a real first batter who can set the table and be a base stealer.

  4. Yankees lost Greg Allen on waivers today too- could never figure out why they didn’t give him more of a chance
