SU cannot verify this but just came across it on Twitter:
From Carlos Beltran’s niece: she says that Altuve and Bregman wore devices that buzzed on the inside of their right shoulder under their uniforms from the video guy in the hallway by the dugout. Remember how Altuve says he doesn’t like it when his teammates try and tear off his uniform shirt after hitting a walk-off home run? Said his wife didn’t like it. Well, says SU, maybe he didn’t want that buzzer revealed? And his niece says she has pictures from the locker room. Let’s get her on the Rachel Maddow Show!
And as I recall, he hit a walk-off home run off of Chapman to win the series. Was that at bat buzzer aided? Many, many questions to be answered…
Tweets all over with clip of Altuve holding his shirt after the homerun that beat the Yankees. It looks really bad in the context of these allegations. Maybe they’re false, but it’s a pretty elaborate story for a relative of Beltran to make up.
If this unravels with damning evidence about players, MLB is going to regret ever looking into this. They’ll be forced to ban players and there could be a union fight. And there was the blessing of managers and coaches which will make that even uglier. And with the gambling component, there could be calls for Congress to get involved (if they ever finish whatever they’re up to) and it’s hard to see that ending well. Will gambling rules get reigned in again. Or will baseball start getting the kind of oversight seen with horse racing which will make it feel even dirtier?
In game 6 against the Yankees, Altuve was on every pitch in that last at bat vs. Chapman. I believe the home run came off the slider. If Altuve was getting “buzzed” from the video guy on every one of those pitches, that would be pretty bad. I thought it was interesting that CC weighed in on the 2017 World Series. You wonder what CC has heard the last few years about what went on. Baseball players keep things close to the vest. I think all MLB can do now is to move forward. Way too messy to start digging around with the players. But you are correct that Las Vegas cannot be happy today.
I believe the Beltran niece account is not a niece but someone with connections to Beltran, who also may have played for the Astros. I totally believe the buzzer story, and MLB’s heated denials of it make it more suspicious. This is as bad as the Black Sox scandal and MLB is trying to bury it. It won’t work.
While we are at it, can we please fire Jessica Mendoza already? Her putrid announcing is bad enough, but her remark blaming Mike Fiers for the scandal is asinine. I recommend Fiers be inducted into the Hall of Fame first ballot five years after his career is over.
