No Time to Panic… but Changes are in Order

SU caught most of the game.  OK, the Gary Sanchez prediction fell flat but face it, the Yankees were not expected to win this game.  Cole is tough and wasn’t even at his best tonight.  SU has seen enough – I have watched a lot of games this year – and it’s time for Aaron Boone to make some adjustments:

  • Gary Sanchez, have a seat.  You need hitters who can put the ball in play and are your best defensively.  Give Romine a start.  There is no downside to this move.  Sanchez has done nothing.  You need hitters who hit the ball.  There is enough power in the line up.
  • Edwin Encarnacion, you are next.  You are either red hot or ice cold.  There is no in between.  True, you had a double but SU has seen enough.  And get this: I want to start Stanton over you at DH.  You can’t put the generational one in the outfield with the quad.  DH is the answer.  Figure it rains tomorrow.  Another day to recuperate.
  • Juggle the line up.  Torres is your best hitter – put him 3rd.  Gardner hit 9th most of the season.  Good spot for him as he can start a rally.  I keep Urshela in there for his defense and he can hit here and there and makes contact.
  • Ottavino: yikes.  He has been terrible.  Cessa looked good tonight.  Give him a shot.

Assuming a rainout tomorrow, start Tanaka Thursday and Paxton Friday.  You don’t see Cole again until Sunday.  Greinke is beatable as is their opener.  The Yankees are paying the price for having too many right handed hitters in the line up but you knew that.  The offense looks bad but hey, you just faced Verlander and Cole.  It’s a 7-game series.  Not over but don’t assume you roll out the same guys next game.  SU has spoken.

  1. you are spot on…. Sanchez needs to sit, although I don’t see that happening. Gardner in the 3 hole is pathetic. He should never bat third- ever. As for Otto- I don’t trust Cessa even though he looked good tonight- I hope for length (beyond 4 innings) from their starters so they don’t need so many guys to finish game…. Need Tanaka and Paxton to get to 90 plus pitches. They are not going to beat Cole… With rainout, Verlander could start game 5. May have a shot beating him in the Bronx. Don’t get down Yankees fans- this series is far from over.

  2. Agree that this is no time to panic. No problem going to Romine. Truth is that he was a real contributor this season. No reason not to get him involved. Sadly the Yankee who has been looking the worst at the plate may be Didi. Not sure how to get him going in this series.

I think Stanton is unable to play. He has not been removed from the roster because they don’t want to lose him for the World Series. This is crazy. He should be gone so that Boone has another player put in the mix.

  3. I agree with all of what SU has said. But as we all know GOOD PITCHING USUALLY BEATS GOOD HITTING. We did have opportunities before the delay. Cole actually looked better after the delay. Looks like the Nor’easter will be at its peak around game time so we will probably have 4 games in a row. That is not good for the Yanks as the added strain on their bullpen might become a factor.

  4. Yankees treat Sanchez with kid gloves as opposed to the starting pitchers, who have to just suck it up when they are pulled for the slightest reason- all they need to do is to say that with the cold, wet weather Sanchez’s groin has stiffened up again- storybook ending of course if for them to go back to Houston down 3-2, win the bullpen game and then beat Cole at home to take the series.

  5. I agree with everything you said and I also believe that Boone will not do anything that you said. With that being the case, I would expect the following for next year: Say goodbye to Encarnacion, Gardner, Gregorius. Platoon Voit and Ford. Platoon Frazier and Tauchman. Stanton at DH. Montgomery, King and Garcia for the back end of the rotation. Resign Betances. They would be up two games to one if he were healthy.
