Joe Girardi to the Mets?

Clearly, others have been reading SU on a regular basis.  Note this article from NJ.com after SU had published earlier in the day:

https://www.nj.com/yankees/2019/05/mlb-rumors-heres-when-ex-yankees-manager-joe-girardi-could-replace-mets-mickey-callaway.html

And this in yesterday’s New York Post from an interview that Girardi did with the imperious one, Mike Francesa:

SU is a big Girardi fan and he would do well in Flushing with the Mets.  No doubt he can even learn to do the big hugs and soothing words for Robinson Cano to get him to run to first base 4 times a day.  SU is surprised no-one has picked him up to date but he is no doubt being selective.

SU is worried that Boone is going to tire out German on the Yankees.  Right now, he is their best pitcher and I am sure he has never pitched this many innings in a season.  They need to watch this closely – can’t afford to lose this guy.  SU says the athletic training staff should study this carefully and then do the opposite to give them a fighting chance of German not going on the IL.

Great exchange between John Sterling and Suzyn Waldman last night discussing the Orioles’ injured DH, Mark Trumbo.  Sterling said that the days of the big home run hitting DH are numbered in baseball as teams want more versatile players.  SU says the obvious contrast is with Giancarlo Stanton on the Yankees who is going to turn into that guy very soon.  But he will still be paid $30 million a year for the next 10 years.  Is he the last of the Mohicans?  A dying breed?  We will see if Sterling draws that conclusion for a player who is very much like Trumbo.

  1. You really don’t know how Germain will do during the dog days of summer. He is young and i’m sure will have some days off… like all of them. I do agree that we do need another solid Starter. Even if our supposed ACE comes back which pitcher will he be… the one from the first half or 2nd half of last year??? Meanwhile Verlander pitched another gem last night. Houston right now is working on all cylinders and has the psychological edge on us as they swept us in Houston. The series coming up against the Red Sox will tell us all a lot. If Houston sweeps them they may be the next 108 winning team. I’m still sticking with 105 wins. Even if we clinch by our 98th win and we rest some of our starters our backups are really good.

    When is the NBA draft?

  2. I’d take Girardi in a heartbeat. He would be a major upgrade over Mickey and perhaps could light a fire for our underperforming veterans.

I don’t think it is likely. Under BVW the Mets see the manager position like a manager at Walmart. There is very little room for innovation or independent thinking. Top down management to a fault. He could provide more discipline and inspiration, but that is about it. Perhaps he is a strong enough personality to help bend the rules and encourage BVW to expand his mindset. One can only hope. It’s pretty clear that the current approach is not working well to maximize the teams performance.

  3. Girardi to the Mets seems possible. Not sure the manager is the only problem there. Cano played the same when under Girardi and I imagine he played the same way in Seattle. New manager will not change his game.

If the manager means anything, then hats off to Boone who seems to win no matter which group of guys is on the roster on a given day.

We’re about 1/4 of the way through the season. There’s plenty of time for things to change but it’s also fair to start looking at stats. Take a look at Machado and Harper. Not good. Not embarrassing, but certainly not bank-breaking good. And this is year one. How will these deals look on the back end….or even 3 years in? The GMs were able to control themselves for most of the off-season and then ended up overpaying for these guys the way history tells us they would. These guys had been good players. Great players. But it’s simply foolish to spend this kind of money on a player. How many people have played for the Yankees this season? 40? How can you justify paying such a large sum to one guy?

    1. You are 100% on the money. Who is really worth $25-$30mm per year? Trout…yes… Maybe a couple of other guys…OK…. The players are for the most part either paid well or being overpaid. Even though he is hurt more often than we like you can say Judge is way underpaid. Who else? Sanchez now-a-days…yes. Torrez/… yes
