Who Knew Plantar Fasciitis was Contagious?

You seriously cannot make this stuff up.  Greg Bird is now on the Injured List with a plantar fascia tear.  Clearly, he got this from Jacoby Ellsbury in spring training down in Tampa.  Everyone is worried about the measles outbreak but the Yankees have their own set of health issues.  SU says this will be the end of Bird’s tenure with the team.  They called up Mike Ford who has been tearing it up at Scranton and it’s time for the Bird era to end in NY.  He has blown every chance and this year in particular.

SU says that the Yankees will soon be in the market for a new Head Trainer and a new Strength and Conditioning coach.  What is going on this year?  And did you see that David Robertson is now on the IL with the Phillies?  That makes Chapman, Betances, Kahnle and Robertson from last year’s bullpen all having issues over the past 12 months.  Cashman never felt that Girardi was enough of a communicator but he knew how to manage the bullpen.  Whatever Boone did last year is having some carryover in 2019.  If the Yankees struggle all year, the Boone era may be short-lived.

The Yankees have been unwatchable all season but you have to figure better times are ahead.  However, no buzz with the Red Sox in town – for either team.  The Mets meanwhile have a circular line up and put the ball in play.  They are worth a look.

Did did you see that Golden State blew a 31-point lead last night at home?  The Clippers scored 85 points in the 2nd half.  Crazy.  And the Sixers had 51 points in the 3rd quarter against Brooklyn.  While SU really enjoys the fast pace and high scoring, just a little bit of defense might not be a bad idea.

  1. As my comments here over the past several seasons, I have never been a fan of Bird. At best i was lukewarm on him. He did a nice job filling in for Teixeira (accompanied by some great walk-up music) but that was for a few weeks and ancient history at this point. He also had a couple good spring trainings. Other than that he has been awful. Tons of strikeouts. No production. I think he could have been better served with lower expectations. As a 7 or 8 hitter in a deep lineup, he may have found his way. But he’s been pressured into the middle of the order and has been overmatched. He also may have some attitude/work-ethic issues. The team will not miss him.

No talk of it and Cashman is relatively patient but I also am not sure about Boone’s future. The injuries and sometimes lackluster play. Maybe these players could use someone who is more of a manager and less of best friend.

  2. Agree on Bird- plantar fasciitis takes forever to heal and Yankees have surely exhausted their patience at this point- too bad, as they really can use a LH bat. (BTW, Ford is a Princeton guy.)
Don’t have to be a consummate communicator to tell your team they suck- underachieving all around. Maybe I’m just too old school (or crotchety in my old age) but still don’t understand how being a coddler-in-chief is the main qualification for the manager’s job.

  3. I really wanted Bird to be the next coming of Lou Gehrig. He just looked the type early in his time with the Yanks. it has been only down hill from there. Everyone hoped that his high performance in Spring training would finally payoff here but he just can’t avoid the DL. Yeas… its time to get some kind of trade value for him… maybe when he heels and has a 2 home run 5 rbi game we can find some sucker to take a chance on him. Hey… maybe in a trade we find out that the new guy has such an accurate arm that the NY Giants might take a chance on him. Being the first inter sport trade might be the trend for the future. Porzingus as a wide receiver. Just throw the ball high. He’ll make the catch and get tackled in 4 sperate places and be on the IR for 4 different kinds of injuries.

  4. I’m just about over a case of plantars that I developed back in September. Maybe I can fill in the lineup for Bird. If you need some more strikeouts at the plate, I will get them for you.
