Last Man Standing for the Yankees

What is going on in the Bronx?  Last night, Chapman lasts only 6 pitches due to knee soreness and if you listened to his post-game comments, this is not a good situation.  He hadn’t pitched in the last week so this is not from over-use.  SU says the DL is in his future.

Meanwhile, David Robertson is having shoulder soreness and was not available last night.  SU has done the math and that means Betances is your new closer unless you suddenly trust Zach Britton.  As Joe Girardi used to say, “It’s not what you want.”

SU has officially had it with Greg Bird.  I have come to agree with long-time subscriber, S. Goldman, that Bird is an average hitter at best who belongs in the 7th or 8th spot in the order.  Aaron Boone has given him every chance to claim 1st base as his own.  Last night, he went 0 for 6 and if you watched the last at bat, he was standing about 8 feet from the plate.  Still struck out.  He needs an extended break.  SU says he may be the type of player who needs to be motivated and a stint on the bench is in order.

The timing is right.  Didi is on the DL and Torres is now playing shortstop.  Let’s put Walker at 1st base and Torreyes at 2nd for the next several games.  Stanton can play right field or throw Tyler Wade out there.  Or put Voit at 1st and Walker in right.  SU says Torreyes should play every day now – guy can hit and is fresh.  This is the right move.

The Yankees need to wipe up before the key West Coast trip against Oakland and Seattle.  Show some fire and get some hits with RISP.  I must say that while their batting averages are pretty bad this year, check out Houston – just as bad.  It’s a sign of the times in baseball.  SU says napping during games is also a sign of the times.  Zzzzzzz.

  1. Since baseball is the only sport I really follow as an avid fan, I pretty much commit to watching most Yankee games start to finish. Last night was torture and I was almost routing for the Marlins to score and end the game so I could go to bed. I hate the status of the game right now–it’s just not that exciting. Yeah get Bird out of there and try something else. Let’s hope we have a fairly healthy roster come playoff time.

  2. Did you see the shots of Jeter’s wife in the team box during the game? Talk about bored. Yankees blew a chance to pick up Daniel Murphy to play 1st for the stretch run.

  3. Ahhh… the twist and turns in sports. Would you prefer your team to be 20 games ahead and just coasting through the last part of the season or the suspense of drama in the making? So some say that Bird still has some nagging injury but he refuses to talk about it. Will putting him on the bench really going to help him? I say no. Every year since the beginning of SU’s existence I often complained what the batting coach really does for the team…. or lack of. Bird had a great post season last year and everyone said he was a natural hitter to all fields. I don’t believe they are pitching him any differently this year. “Hey Coach…. what gives with The Bird Man?” I’m tired of hearing the same generalities from our “Head” Coach. Can someone interview the Batting Coach or lay into Girardi’s replacement? It’s OK if you light a fire under Bird? Ditto with Sanchez if when he returns and possibly gets lazy. It is certainly not working with all this damn coddling.

8-2 including last night is a must before we head out west. I don’t care who is out. We can do this. Oakland/Houston/Seattle collide a lot but the Yanks do play Oakland and Seattle in their backyard starting Labor Day. If we go 500 against both teams that’s a victory.

Lastly, what’s the real story with Severino. You don’t simply go from being in the Cy Young discussion to not at all without knowing his situation? The speed is there? Is the movement there?

HAVE THE YANKEES SIMPLY PEAKED WAY TOO EARLY AND TEASED/FOOLED US ALL? We will know by September 1st what this team is made of while alot of our weapons are out.

    1. It’s definitely not a matter of peaking too soon. You will know more once Sanchez and Judge return as well as Didi now. I hadn’t heard about a Bird injury – interesting theory. He certainly doesn’t run well although I don’t recall him ever having any speed. The announcers talked about “a process” that he was going through and that he was getting closer. No clue.
