Baseball Trivia Time

As previously stated here, SU tends to stay away from putting trivia questions out there as many are tempted to access the internet very quickly to look up the answers.  But SU thought this was a good question which came up on the Yankee broadcast on Wednesday.

“There have been 3 pitchers who have started both for the Yankees and against them in the World Series.  Can you name them?”

Hint: think modern day era – from the 1970s onward.  Have at it.  SU was able to get 2 of the 3 and was annoyed that I didn’t get the third one.  Neither Michael Kay or Paul O’Neill got any of them which was odd as O’Neill was a teammate of one of them.

SU is a little concerned about Glayber Torres’ injury.  He seems pretty young to have a hip flexor injury but apparently he has been dealing with this for years and does regular exercises to take care of it.  I guess we will see if keeping Neil Walker on the roster will pay dividends now as he slides into 2nd base.  Ronald Torreyes is out on the inactive list – medical issue for a family member.  Brandon Drury will also get some at bats – still waiting for him to show me something.  SU likes the way the Yankees don’t dwell on the injuries – it’s next man up.  That should be the mindset.

As far as getting that starting pitcher, SU does not see anyone out there who is that much of an upgrade other than DeGrom on the Mets.  Cashman and Omar Minaya are friends and that is one to watch.  The worry here continues to be that they will trade Andujar in that deal which SU feels would be a major mistake.

Giancarlo Stanton is hot.  History says watch out for the injury now.  But Clint Frazier is waiting in the wings and is also hot.  He deserves a shot and soon.

  1. Watch the Yankees bring up Tyler Wade and then pair him with Walker on one of the days that Boone feels he must rest Andujar- must see TV!

    1. Tyler Wade is surely coming to a theatre near you to be over-powered by major league pitching yet again. He is one of those AAA+ players who is not quite major league ready for whatever reason. Boone had avoided the Clay Bellinger line up that Torre used to employ to always prevent the Yankees from sweeping a series until recently but now is happy to lose a game here and there. The problem is that those random games will be the difference between winning the division vs. ending up as the wild card.

  2. Torrez should start to train consistently in order to remain in peak shape. I’m sure he will be just fine but ya gotta star early enough to remain in good physical shape.

I love Andujar too, but the nightmare scenario is we become the wild card team and even though we would most likely play at home going up Houston or Seattle’s ace in a one and done scenario it seems like we would have no choice but to use Severino. If the Yanks are tied, or +/- 1 against Boston heading into the last game in Boston it would seem likely to use Severino to ice the victory and bring about a tie so there would be an additional 1 game playoff. Too bad a tie in your record doesn’t lead to the run differential and then how many “yellow” cards each team received over the season…. and of course maybe using hit-by-pitches as the 4th tie breaker.

DeGrom for Andujar and ??? I would make that trade all day long. Just keep thinking of where Houston would be without Verlander. Jason Degrom would be our Verlander…. case closed… World Series victory.

  3. Rest assured that it’s Andujar, Drury, and several other top prospects like Justus Sheffield and Clint Frazier. The Mets would want prospects who are major league ready. My point is don’t include Andujar in that basket of top prospects. But make the Mets take Jacoby Ellsbury as part of that. He can hang out with Wright.

  4. I’d say history predicts 15+ HRs in the month of July for Stanton, not an injury. When this guy is hot he can carry a team single handedly. The love affair is certain to blossom, it’s irresistible!

Degrom’s value will never be higher. As much as I love him (Heading out to see him tonight) you would have to consider a trade for the right package. I would be looking for Torres or Sanchez plus 2 high end younger prospects (Top 10 in Yanks System) We need to get back a position player who can be a star. Not sure if Andujar and/or Fraizier are in that same class. Both are good players but in DeGrom you are looking at a top 5 pitcher in the game with 2 1/2 years of cheap control. He also does not have a lot of miles on the tires. He was a shortstop coming out of college. Looking at the next 3 years what gives the Yanks the best odds of winning the World Series, DeGrom pitching and Drury at 2B or Domingo German pitching and Torres at 2B? Take your pick. Tough call.

  5. Now I am just throwing out names: Kevin Brown, Al Downing, Mike Torrez, Denny Nagel. If none of those I have to give up

  6. Small ball win for the Yankees yesterday with Romine moving the runner and Gardner driving him in. With the go-ahead or winning run on first base, who would you rather have coming up? Romine and Gardner or Sanchez and Stanton?

Lots of focus on trades and injuries and lineup but we shouldn’t lose sight of how good a playoff race we’re witnessing. The Yankees just went 4-2 in the last 7 days and they LOST two games in the standings. The Yankees have an exciting team that’s clicking and so do the Red Sox. Maybe we think it’s too early to be watching the standings but these teams have been neck and neck for months. When the season is over we don’t want to look back and realize we weren’t paying attention. Every game counts and the current Wild Card structure is going to make this race so much more exciting than those of the 2000s.
