The Greatness of LeBron

Several members of the intergalactic SU subscriber base have asked SU to weigh in on LeBron and what he has accomplished in this year’s playoffs to date.  Think about what he has done:

  • The Cavs traded Kyrie for Isiah Thomas who was basically a non-factor for Cleveland.  Thomas is then traded to the Lakers for a bunch of reserve type players.  The net is he lost the only other All-Star on the team.
  • He single-handedly willed them to the victory over the Pacers, and then they swept the #1 seed in the East in 4 games.
  • He is playing about 45 minutes a game, and knows that for them to win, he needs to score 35+ points, have around 10 assists and 10 rebounds.  Anything less than his A game and they lose.

It really has been impressive.  SU does not like the way he argues every foul call which sometimes results in not running down court but I suppose this helps him conserve energy.  But he puts out every game and is scoring from every angle and every way.  SU says he is deserving to be in the conversation with Michael Jordan at this point in his career.  At his age, this season has been remarkable with this roster.

  1. Agreed. Though more than 50% of the players also complain after every non call. He shoots even better than you, me and Andy but he can also go to the hoop anytime.

  2. Agreed 100%. I’d still go with Jordan but the conversation is legitimate. I don’t like LeBron but I didn’t like Jordan either. In fact, I hated him, primarily for standing in the way of otherwise competitive Knicks teams. But they are both to be respected for what they do. It’s not just about carrying a team. Other players have done this. It’s about making everyone around you better and Lebron and Jordan are the best at this. (Note the opposite is Carmelo Anthony who makes everyone around him worse.)

  3. I always thought that Bird was the best at making everyone around him better but MJ won more and more consistently after he broke through and won his first title. LeBron and MJ are definitely in the same conversation though. I give LeBron the edge in defending bigger players but Jordan’s killer instinct was off the charts.

  4. More and more I can’t help but to agree with you. Where it use to be 1 and 2… I now have to go with 1 and 1A…. Just ask yourself… if you had to start a team in which that player will be on your team whether its for 1 year or 10 years who do you want to pick. I gotta go with Labron. and then Jordan. Where as Jordan, purely for offense is better. Labron can cover all 5 positions. I guess his only Achilles heel is his foul shooting. I believe its in the low 70’s. Jordan has pretty much had the same team throughout his career and he had Scottie Pippen….. who could take some of the heat off of him from time to time. LaBron does not have that luxury. I believe Pippen also made the top 50 in the 20th Century. That has to help anyone. Too bad Jordan had to play baseball. Winning n8 in a row would have kept him unquestionably at the #1 spot.
The question is now… what if LaBron actually beats someone out west to win it all this year? I would move him ahead of Jordan then.
