Let’s be clear: the decision by the Giants to remove Eli as the starting QB for the remainder of the season is not necessarily wrong. The team is going nowhere, all of the receivers and their back-ups are injured and the offensive line is just not good – even when fully healthy. SU has no issue with a decision to see what you have on the roster at the QB position.
The issue is that they should be playing Davis Webb and no-one else. He is (potentially) the future and since you drafted him and believed he has some skills, let’s find out if he is any good. You know what you have in Geno Smith: a mediocre quarterback of questionable character. He will be gone next season and there is a body of work to analyze if you are curious about his abilities. SU says playing him makes no sense.
As for Eli, the reality is that this is professional sports. He has had a great run in NY, is a borderline Hall of Famer and has stayed healthy in a sport where that is almost impossible to do. You could certainly start Eli for the remainder of the season and then release him but you would be passing up a golden opportunity to see what Webb can do. Wins and losses are meaningless now – in fact, it’s better to lose and get a higher draft pick (see NBA for multiple references). It would be great for Eli to be treated with more respect from that standpoint but hey, he gets paid a lot of money and the Giants are now all about the future. Former players need to get over that and cease with the respect references in their tweets. SU says play Webb and Geno only gets in if Webb is injured.
Carlos Beltran is next up in the interview box for the Yankees’ managerial position. Let’s see why he is qualified: he does speak Spanish and he did play baseball. Oh, and he’s a good friend of Brian Cashman. By the way, SU is being interviewed on Friday. I do follow the Yankees closely, I can speak a little French and even some Hebrew in case the Yankees hire an Israeli player and I will tell Gary Sanchez to take his mask off for plays at the plate. I will even play Chris Carter as instructed.
If nothing else, Cashman is keeping the Yankees in the news on a weekly basis during the off-season and he can take his time as all other managerial slots have been filled for 2018. You just hope he picks someone who is qualified. SU gets the emphasis today on being able to communicate and relate to players of all types and backgrounds and the emphasis on analytics. But Beltran is on record as not looking at the analytics or even video until recently. How is he your choice? If you want, make him the bench coach and the manager in waiting.
The Knicks have proven that they need a full and healthy roster to compete. The absence of Enos Kanter has hurt them the last few games. Trey Burke went off for 29 points and 9 assists on Monday night. He should be given a shot.
OK, it’s time for you to weigh in. Should Eli be benched?
It’s sad, but it’s time to deconstruct the team, a la 2016 Yankees. The Giants need a major rebuild; in all areas both players and coaches. With Tom Coughlin a distant memory, Eli is the face of the franchise. Time for a new face. This will likely be Geno Smith epic failure with rapid replacement by Webb Davis. A huge disappointment, after spending all that money in a mediocre defense; and never addressing the glaring weakness in the offensive line.

Agreed and they should be putting their list together for GMs and coaches for next season. The good thing about the NFL is that you can bounce back quickly with some good draft picks and free agent signings given the absence of guaranteed contracts.
No strong opinion on benching of Eli but agree 100% about Smith being a waste of time. Only justification I can come up with (and it’s supported by some of the news coverage yesterday) is that the team is going to try to fill some seats with people who want to see the first African American QB to start for the Giants. Not sure that the team should be promoting the fact that they are the last NFL team to do this but I guess it’s been that kind of a season.
The Yankees managerial situation continues to baffle. More and more you have to wonder what they were thinking. For a team that supposedly has a plan, this is an indication that they don’t. Unless, their plan is to demonstrate to whomever gets the job that the front office really doesn’t place any value whatsoever on the role. They want the manager to know that there’s a list of 20 replacements that Cashman can go to if orders are not followed. Maybe that’s an approach. I just can’t help of how much simpler everything would be if we just knew that Girardi was going to be manager. Some managers say they go back to work the day after the season ends. Others say they go back to work just before the winter meetings. You would think you would want the new guy to have as much time to prepare as possible…unless you really don’t want him to do anything.
Seth, I think the Yankees are going to script their games in 2018 like Bill Walsh and Joe Montana used to do with the SF 49ers for their first 15 plays of the game. The manager will come in and be handed the script for the line up, relievers and post-game comments. Of course, all post game comments will be in English, Spanish and Japanese and then back to the clubhouse to give out the post-game hugging awards.
I am not an Eli fan – but if they are going all in on the change, they should go with Webb. My opinion is that Eli is probably more peeved about the Geno Smith thing than anything else.
Bench him and start Webb. It will help us decide whether we need to select a franchise QB in the draft or not…. otherwise a whole bunch of offensive linemen. However, whatever our roster is for next season we definitely need a new head coach. I never liked him and like him even less today. I don’t care how many injuries we have he definitely lost a big chunk of the player’s believing in him. That doesn’t make the players any better people as this could happen again. How they gave up is even more astonishing. They have what is called a glass jaw. Any controversy, any getting down in the game and the reaction from the players is “I GIVE UP.” That’s absolutely disgusting and would probably happen to any coach in MacAdoo’s place. Unfortunately, as talented as some of these players are if they promote unacceptable behavior then get rid of them before the cancer spreads…. as what happened here. This is the first time I can recall that the Giants organization looks classless.I guess late in Allie Sherman’s coaching career it had happened as well but i don’t recall the team not trying. They just weren’t any good. That’s the difference.
Jealous Mets fan here… Over the years, the SU global subscriber base has had plenty of criticism of Cashman. C’mon! Aside from the fact that a low expectation team in rebuilding mode was a game away from the World Series this year, Cashman has been the GM for 20 years and the team has never had a losing season under his reign. Granted, he has a big budget, but we know that big salary teams aren’t always winning teams. I get the feeling that the guy knows what he’s doing.
Evan, I don’t argue with his record. But to be honest, over the past 3-4 years, Cashman put together a boring product on the field and really only started to restock the minor league system last year when he was masterful. Most GMs would say that given the budget, they could have done as well as he has. He is certainly knowledgeable and I like that he pretty much speaks his mind these days. I just think the managerial search is a bit odd and would agree that you would have thought he had someone in mind for the job already given that he was going to fire Girardi at the end of the year and had decided to do that months ago. But I understand your perspective and from other Met fans who might view it differently.
