Yankees Sign Chris Carter to 1-Year Deal

Pitchers and catchers still haven’t reported as of yet but it’s not too early to be irritated by the Yankees for 2017.  Chris Carter?  He of 41 home runs and 206 strikeouts last year to go with his lifetime .216 batting average.  What????!!!!

SU says that Andruw Jones obviously could not be lured out of retirement so Cashman felt Carter would be the next best thing.  They already have Aaron Judge who may put up these types of numbers.  I suppose Carter is insurance at 1st base in case Greg Bird doesn’t regain his form from 2015.

But let’s face it.  This is not inspiring.  SU would rather have Carmelo Anthony at first base.  At least he would be off the Knicks’ roster.

  1. Ugh! Maybe bat Carter and Judge back-to-back so fans can go buy some food or go to the bathroom without having to worry about missing some action? Team has to get younger and more capable of putting the ball in play.

  2. Uninspiring. Don’t need all those strikeouts and I can’t see him hitting 40 HRs in Yankee Stadium. Still, I know the fan base is optimistic but it makes sense for management to get some proven talent on the roster. As fans we like what we saw of Bird (a very short stint a couple years ago with an injury in between) and we want to give Judge a chance (even though he showed absolutely nothing late last season). There is a pretty decent chance that neither of those two prove to be major league talent. So, I understand Carter. I just would rather get my .200 hitters from inside the organization.

  3. Josh’s idea is marketing gold. Yankee stadium just got voted to be most fan friendly stadium in MLB. Just think of how many beers they will sell now that fans know they have a built in bathroom break at least every three innings.

  4. That’s less than $75,000 per HR. Carter has many shortcomings but he did lead the National League in Home Runs. Compared to the Mets $13 million insurance policy Jay Bruce this is a tremendous bargain. Chris Coghlin just got a $3 mil deal with Phils and he batted 190 with 6 HRs. Remember the Diaza contract with Mets for $6 mil last year. There is no downside to this unless you are named Tyler Austin. Carter has got to have the worst sports agent in the history of MLB. He has hit 131 Home Runs over the last 4 years and this is the thanks he gets. Stop crying and be thankful that the Yanks will gladly toss out 1 year and $3 mil to insure some long balls at the stadium this summer.

  5. Jeff, Yankee fans have seen enough of the strictly pull, high strikeout hitters over the past several years. Mark Texeiria did it from both sides of the plate at the end of his career. You can already picture this: major overshift and Carter still trying to hit through it. Baseball today requires hitting to all fields and putting the ball in play. Solo homeruns do nothing for you. I will gladly send Carter to the Mets.
