So, what the hell was going on with Odell Beckham Jr. yesterday? He totally lost it and just could not regain his composure for an entire game. At some point, you are hurting your team and someone needs to take you aside and set you straight. SU says that 5 years ago, Tom Coughlin is that guy and he is riding the bench – must game or no must game. Surprisingly, he let it go and even after the game, he sure didn’t sound like Tom Coughlin to me. I guess he sees the hand-writing on the wall and the finish line is in sight. Beckham is his best player and he just doesn’t want to bring the hammer down on him. In past years, there would have been some senior citizen on the roster who had the respect of the team who could have taken care of this. But other than JPP, hard to put a finger on who that might be this year.
He will surely get suspended for a game and that just hurts the Giants’ playoff chances even more. As a fan, you like the fight and the passion but it’s misplaced. Coaches at every level have pulled guys off the court or field for the last 2,000 years when they start acting this way. SU doesn’t feel there will be any long-term effects. Beckham is a smart guy and he knows his brand will suffer if he keeps letting defenders get under his skin. He will make the adjustment and move on.
The Giants lost in predictable fashion. No pass rush means having to blitz all the time and they still couldn’t get to Newton. Oh well, only a couple more weeks of torture from this year’s group. The Jets meanwhile still have a pulse and find ways to win. You have to give Bowles a lot of credit in his first year as coach. Rex may be on the way out after just one year up in Buffalo.
“But other than JPP, hard to put a finger on who that might be this year.” I see what you did there, you subtle dog.
Shep, believe me, I am not that clever.
Article came out today about Carolina Panthers players bringing black baseball bats onto the field during pre-game warm ups and evidently taunting Beckham. Doesn’t validate his actions but seems unnecessary. The article did go on to mention that the Panthers have done this for almost every game this season, so it was not specific to ODB: http://football.realgm.com/wiretap/35893/Panthers-Swung-Baseball-Bats-Pregame-Taunting-Odell-Beckham
Bekham deserves whatever fine, suspension or hit to his brand that he has coming. But you’re right that the coach is at even greater fault (although I’d add the officials who seem to be entirely neutered and should just be replaced by some more cameras and the guys in NY at this point). You see dirty plays and lost tempers in the NFL all the time. Its an intense game played with emotion by all types of knuckleheads and hotheads. Yet you never see this. Why? Because the adults step in and keep it from getting to this point.
Also, the Jets got the win but it couldn’t have looked worse. When you look at that game, they should have won by 3 touchdowns. Hard to see them winning out.
When you have only 1 weapon at Eli’s disposal coupled withe the worst defense in the league and for good measure toss in no other Giant player with fire nor leadership ability than Beckum what is thr Coach suppose to do?
Yes, he hurt the team for next week but do u yhink we would have gotten to 35-35 without Beckum’s total package yesterday?
I had read that same article about the black baseball bats. But it sounds like the Panthers do that every game to every team so I don’t know why Beckham would be that much more amped here. No doubt their corner back is also a jerk. I don’t think Coughlin tolerates this behavior if he is more secure in his job. I understand the logic of wanting to keep Beckham in there and true, he made some plays late in the game. It’s a learning moment for Beckham and I am sure he will modify his behavior going forward.
