October is just around the corner

SU congratulates the Mets on wrapping up the Eastern Division in fine style.  Clearly, there was no reason to be nervous about another late season collapse.  The offense is once again clicking (games against the Reds and Phillies are very good for that) and they should now look to get home field advantage in that first round series with the Dodgers.  SU says that is huge.  Having the extra game at Citifield could be the difference in winning the first round of the playoffs.  They should not adopt the Joe Torre approach of resting half your regulars every game but rather keep the foot on the gas and get the better record.

Meanwhile, SU was was very, very disappointed to learn that the reason Stephen Drew was being held out of the line-up the last 2 weeks was because he’s been feeling dizzy, not because he was benched.  Now, Girardi/Cashman may still put him on the post-season roster.  How can this be?  I was positive they had finally seen the light and at a minimum would play Ackley ahead of him and maybe even Refsnyder over Brendan Ryan.  It’s time to sacrifice a little defense to get some more offense.  How can they not see that?

SU subscriber Mark N. is wating for more NFL commentary.  The Jets fell back to earth against a very pedestrian Eagles team yesterday.  Chip Kelly may think he is the smartest guy in the room but last time I looked, his play calling is not a whole lot different from any other team.  I like the Jets’ new coach – guy keeps it cool and has a plan.  But 6-10 still feels about right for them this year.

SU asks: how do the so-called NFL experts feel when their preseason predictions are so wrong after just 3 games?  SI’s choice to win the Super Bowl, Baltimore, is 0-3.  It just goes to show that the average fan is not that far behind the people that do this for a living.

Interesting article in the New York Times yesterday about DraftKings:

They advertise so much today on many sports events. Somehow this is not considered to be gambling.  But an interesting read on how the experts play it and make money.

Finally, this headline on espn.com should make all Knick fans nervous:

Carmelo Anthony offers to be ‘big brother’ to Kristaps Porzingis

  1. After reading that NY Times article – my son and I actually tried the promo code and $1 game. It is totally gambling – plain and simple. As the article hinted – draft kings doesn’t give you much inside information. You could have picked Dez Bryant up – whereas the ESPN site at least gives you “0” points for people on injury. I’m giving up on the hope of “winning $3million just by putting $35 down”….

  2. A very rare comment form me but certainly irks me. A routine hard hit ball goes right by an outfielder because he doesn’t put his body in front of it. They call it a home run or this week it was a grand slam home run. If I was the pitcher I would be really pissed yet it is never menoioned by anyone on the air or in print. It should be a three base error. Tony

    1. Agreed. I saw Cespedes do that recently. Just because you don’t touch it, doesn’t mean it’s an error. If the ball passed 1 foot by you untouched, it’s still an error. Very strange.

  3. I thought Kristaps already had a brother. Nice of Carmelo to offer to join the family though.

As far as the Jets go, 3 INT’s and a Marshall rugby pitch to the opposition makes it hard for the D to do their job. I think the O went 3 and out their first 4 possessions too. All the Jets need is a game manager at the QB position and they’ll make the playoffs. I’m sure Fitzpatrick is getting that lecture even as we speak.

  4. Mark, I think if you look up “Game Manager” in the dictionary you will find a picture of Ryan Fitzpatrick. However, he has been prone to the stupid INT his entire career at the worst moments.

  5. Anybody home in Yankeeland? Lowest home attendance since 1999 for a Yankee- Red Sox game. I give the fans credit for knowing when its not worth seeing a team probably at its worse….. with no hitting and no pitching combined. Another starter last night who looked terrible. So CC, Nova and Pineda all showed us recent horrible outings. 22 year old Serivino has now become the Stopper. What does that say?
Bird now has been slumping. What happened to McCann? A 275 hitter a month ago is now at 235. Gardner has been hitting a crisp 207 since the All Star break. Uh Oh… What happened to Girardi’s mastery of juggling all his players around to give them a blow. Ya can’t do it now.

As bad as we are now nothing could be worse from a human factor than the NY Giants considering Wes Welker who might be a hit away from permanent major head issues or worse.. Here is a guy who needs to be saved from himself. This is a situation where i don’t mind if the NFL steps in and says NO to Wes on becoming an active player again. After all they must protect the Shield…. and its the right thing to do.

i HOPE EVERYONE OUT THERE HAS SOMETHING TO DO OVER THE WINTER AS THE KNICKS WILL PROBABLY HAVE BACK TO BACK 60 GAME LOSSES…. A SPECIAL TIME NOW FOR THOSE DIE HEARD KNICK FANS. DEFENSE ! DEFENSE ! i guess we can check out any new catchy rhymes from Clyde..

    GO NORTHWESTERN !!!
